PRESENTATION: Architecture as a Poetic Act: The Open City Collaborative at the Catholic University of Valparaiso in Ritoque, Chile — by Natalija Subotincic (in English) Saturday April 13 2024
La Ciudad Abierta, the Open City, is an extraordinary collective construction in the sand dunes of Ritoque, Chile. It was founded in the early 1960's by a group of architects, designers, and poets associated with the architecture school of the Catholic University of Valparaiso. Despite its 60 year history and radical architectural experiments, the work of the Open City is still relatively unknown in North America. In this lecture, Natalija Subotincic will share her knowledge of this poetic city, gained from her time living with this remarkable collective.
THREE SHORT FILMS by The Quay Brothers. Sat. April 11 2024
Street of Crocodiles (1986, 21 min.) An astonishing rendering of the 1933 novel-memoir by the Polish writer and artist Bruno Schulz with soundtrack by Polish composer Lech Jankowski.
The Unnamable Little Broom (1985, 11 min.) "Being a largely disguised reduction of the Epic of Gilgamesh"
Rehearsals For Extinct Anatomies (1987, 14 min.) "These doors have been engraved with great modesty and dedicated to London Underground as part of its present evangelical rampage. And to the single still dreaming hair on his brow with its desire to disturb the wallpaper"
If you have never seen these films before you are in for a thrilling (if slightly disturbing) surreal treat. (Not really suitable for children)
